Understanding the Evaluation Process
Our evaluation process is designed to gradually introduce players to the drills, skills, and gameplay assessments used throughout evaluations.
Alpha Skates
- Players are grouped alphabetically by last name.
- Coaches guide players through evaluation drills in a relaxed environment.
- These sessions help players become comfortable before formal evaluations begin.
Skills Evaluation Skates
- Players complete drills assessing skating, puck control, passing, shooting, and hockey fundamentals.
- Sports Evaluations provides independent third-party evaluators who assess and score players from the stands.
Game Play Evaluations
- Players participate in scrimmages and game-based evaluation sessions.
- Evaluators assess positioning, decision-making, hockey sense, effort, and competitiveness.
- Groupings may be adjusted throughout the process to ensure fair and accurate placement.
- Movement between groups is possible throughout evaluations.
Skills Evaluation Criteria
During the Skills Evaluation Skates, players are assessed by Sports Evaluations in several core hockey skill areas.
Skating
Speed, edge work, acceleration, balance, agility, and stopping ability.
Puck Control
Ability to control and handle the puck while stationary and at speed.
Passing
Passing accuracy, strength, timing, and ability to receive passes cleanly.

Game Play Evaluation Criteria
During Game Play Evaluations, evaluators and coaches assess how players perform in a team and game environment.

Evaluators use a standardized scoring system throughout the evaluation process to help ensure consistency and fairness.
How Player Placement Works
Our evaluation process is designed to place players in the group that best supports their development, confidence, and enjoyment of the game. Placements are based on performance during both Skills and Game Play Evaluations, with opportunities for movement throughout the process.
Initial Group Placement
- After Skills Evaluation Skates, players are placed into evaluation groups based on their scores.
- These groups are then used during Game Play Evaluations to assess performance in a team environment.
- Initial placement is intended to help create fair and competitive evaluation groups.
Movement Between Groups
- Players may move between groups throughout the Game Play Evaluation process.
- Players demonstrating stronger performance may be moved up to a higher group.
- Players requiring additional support or development may move to a different group.
- Decisions are made collaboratively using input from Sports Evaluations and North SEERA Hockey Directors.
By the end of evaluations, each player will be placed in the group that best aligns with their current skill level and development needs, helping create the best possible environment for success throughout the season.
Goaltender Evaluation Details
Goaltenders will attend a dedicated goalie skills evaluation session prior to Game Play Evaluations. This session is designed to assess position-specific skills and help determine initial group placement for evaluation games.
Following the goalie skills session, goaltenders will participate in three Game Play Evaluation skates where they will be evaluated in realistic game situations.
Full-Time Goaltenders
If your child intends to be a full-time goaltender this season, please confirm their attendance by emailing:

Important: Full-time goaltenders do not need to attend player technical skates, as those sessions are designed for evaluating skaters only.
Evaluations
Evaluations help North SEERA place players on balanced teams where they can compete, develop, and have a great hockey experience.
Evaluation Schedules
Third-Party Evaluators
North SEERA uses independent third-party evaluators for U9, U11, and U13 evaluations through Sports Evaluations.
Using external evaluators helps provide a more consistent and objective evaluation process while supporting balanced team formation across all divisions.
What Families Need to Know
Why We Hold Evaluations
The goal of evaluations is to place players in the right environment for their current stage of development. We want players challenged, supported, and set up for a positive season.
Evaluations are not about one drill, one skate, or one moment. They are designed to give players multiple opportunities to show their skills, effort, hockey sense, and overall readiness.
How Evaluations Work
Alpha Skates
Alpha Skates are early ice sessions where players are usually grouped alphabetically by last name. These sessions help players get comfortable, shake off the rust, and give us an initial look before formal evaluations begin.
Skills Evaluations
Players complete structured drills where skating, puck control, passing, shooting, and overall skill level are assessed.
Game Evaluations
Players participate in game-style sessions where evaluators can assess effort, positioning, decision-making, competitiveness, and how players contribute in a team environment.
How Teams Are Formed
Evaluation results help guide team placement. The goal is to create teams where players are grouped with others at a similar stage of development.
Final team placement may also consider roster balance, positions, goalie numbers, registration totals, and league requirements.
